Top 5 Family Activities around the Fal River in Winter

Cornwall is renowned for its beautiful beaches and stunning scenery and is of course a popular summer destination. However, winter in Cornwall is magical too and there are plenty of events, activities and attractions to keep all of the family entertained. There’s so much to choose from but we’ve come up with our top 5 family activities around the Fal River in winter to add to your holiday itinerary.

1.Step into Falmouth Christmas

Throughout December, Falmouth shines bright with its market that offers so much more than just shopping and food. The exciting schedule of events at this year’s Falmouth Christmas includes a Santa fun run, Christmas movies on the moor and Falmouth’s own version of ‘Frozen’. So, whether you fancy dressing the kids up as elves to run about raising money for charity; enjoying a festive screening of ‘Home Alone’ with a delicious hot chocolate; or a good old fashioned Disney sing-along, there’s something for every taste. 2.Inspire their imagination at Trebah Gardens

As Christmas approaches, Trebah Gardens will host three days of festive fun: the Santa days! It’s a great chance for children to meet Father Christmas in a beautiful setting. With the grotto open from 10.30 am – 3.30 pm, families can explore Trebah Gardens via the “Toboggan Robin” tongue twister trail, eventually making their way to  Elves Village. Children who meet Father Christmas will receive a special pre-Christmas treat and can also get involved in festive face painting and get creative with Christmas decoration making workshops. £3 per child includes entry, trail and a gift from Father Christmas; you can find the full details here.

3.Experience fantastic family entertainment at the Hall for Cornwall

Enjoy a Cornish take on the much-loved fairytale, ‘Jack & the Beanstalk’. Starring Cornwall’s very own Kernow King, and the popular panto villain, Granville Saxton, this spectacular show at the Hall for Cornwall promises to be a family favourite. Why not relax with a pre-show meal at the theatre? There are two-course and three-course options available, as well as a separate children’s menu. So get set for a creative Crimbo adventure this winter, sure to be loved by children and adults alike, and book your tickets here.

4.Make a splash at Ships & Castles

When this year’s fun and merriment is over, what better way to chase away the January blues than with a splash around at Ships & Castles, Cornwall’s finest fun pool? Situated on Pendennis Headland in Falmouth, this awesome leisure pool features a wave machine and a river ride, bringing all the excitement of the ocean into a warm and safe environment! There’s a shallow beach area for the little ones to play away from the main pool area and, for families with older children between the ages of 8-14, the evening wave rave is not to be missed. View the full details and opening times here.

5.Burn off that energy and explore beautiful beaches

Don’t forget that the weather can be refreshing and rejuvenating at this time of year, so why not wrap up warm for a bracing seaside walk? St Mawes and the Roseland Penninsula are home to some of the best beaches in the UK; you can see what we mean here. After blowing away the cobwebs, you’ll have the perfect excuse to indulge in a hot meal at a cosy Cornish pub with wonderful waterside views. We strongly suggest the picturesque Pandora Inn, perfectly placed on the edge of Restronguet Creek. The award-winning 13th Century Inn is the ideal spot to enjoy fresh, local produce in a traditional setting. Best of all, you can access the inn via the St Mawes Water Taxi.

Hop on and off the ferries, busses and trains to explore the many attractions of Falmouth, Truro and St Mawes.
